My apologies for interrupting the news group with yet another
employment opportunity announcement. I hope the subject line was
sufficient to warn people off if they aren't in the market.

We are currently soliciting resumes for a few summer student
positions. The most important qualification is a willingness to work
hard and to be meticulous in carrying out assignments. Specific
skills that a candidate should also have include experience writing
Python applications or Python extension modules. The ideal candidate
would also have, or be working towards, a degree in electrical
engineering and have prior work experience using EE CAD systems.
Prior experience building device models in VHDL, SPICE or EDIF would
also be a plus. If the position appeals to you but you don't have all
the skills mentioned please let us know you are interested. We don't
expect to find anyone with all the qualifications listed.

This summer's task involves creating software frameworks within the
Automated Electronics Manufacturing Testbed. Research topic areas
in the testbed include:

Electronic Commerce of Component Information

The ECCI project will integrate existing Internet protocols, industry
standards for product information representation, and database
technologies into a framework that will provide application
developers with a standardized method for accessing information in
a virtual catalog for electronic components.

Research and Engineering Framework (REF)

The development of the REF is part of an initiative to create a
computational environment for niche engineering applications.
The goal of the project is to create an easy to use framework that
lowers the cost of developing applications for activities such as
the design and analysis of microwave power tubes and the
configuration and analysis of high frequency antenna.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Framework

This project will create a factory control system framework for the
semiconductor industry. The framework has been defined using the Object
Management Group's IDL. We are exploring the use of Python as a
means of testing the framework. Python might also be used as
an implementation language the framework. (The prototype control
system was written in Smalltalk.)

The main focus of the summer activities will be the ECCI project.
However, the ultimate goal is to find common elements between the
three topic areas and to build a generic application framework
environment for Python.

In addition to working with the NIST staff on this project, there will
be an opportunity to interact with the author of Python, Guido van
Rossum. Guido is currently making arrangements to spend the next year
in the Washington D.C. metro area. As part of the arrangement he will
spend a couple days a month working at NIST as a Guest Researcher.
His work at NIST will include participation in the framework projects
within the Automated Electronics Manufacturing Testbed.

You can reply directly to me through email if you are interested. The
official contact on the NIST Student Temporary Employment Program is
Kim Goode. She can be contacted by email at Goode@micf.nist.gov.
Qualified applicants will be required to submit a resume or the form
"Application for Federal Employment (SF-171)".
