Python 1.0.0 BETA 5 -- also for Macintosh!

Python 1.0.0 BETA 5 is out. It is at the usual place: ftp.cwi.nl,
/pub/python, python1.0.0beta.tar.Z. Within 24 hours it will also be
on gatekeeper and uunet. I think I'll stop working on it for a while
-- it's getting fairly stable and portable, and the build procedure is
about as smootht as it can be. I've installed a Mac version as well
-- a self-extracting archive called python.sea.hqx. This includes the
library (but no demos) so you can start right away!

I've decided that the renaming project is too big to handle for this
release. Also it is of course a version control maintenance -- might
as well start a fresh set of RCS files...

What remains to be done before release is mostly writing manuals, and
possibly portability for more systems. I still haven't heard from
anyone porting it to IBM, DEC or HP hardware -- what are you guys
doing? Still recovering from the holiday season? Or is is going so
smoothly that you forget to mail me about it?

BTW: are comp.sources.{unix,misc} dead? Would it be a better idea to
post this to alt.sources instead?
