I don't have any direct experience formally teaching it, but I've found
that many non-programming people can read and understand my Python code
with little or no effort. This parallels with COBOL in readability,
though Python is much more structured (this is my OPINION, no flames
please).

I think Python is a good idea as a first language for a couple reasons.
One is that it's interpreted, so it's more interactive, second it has a
relatively clean syntax and grammar, which is something that cannot be
said for many other interpreted languages. Go for it, and I'd love ot
know how it goes.
