Newbie: Problems with Tkinter

Hi,
I just stumbled over python and decided to test it for my purposes
(embedding, substitute for Tcl/Tk). I built it on a Solaris Sun and the normal
tests run Ok. But when I try to run the tkinter demos, most of them will
dump core or print errors like

Can't open /var/mail/Tkinter
AttrDialog.py: class: not found
AttrDialog.py: varclass: not found
AttrDialog.py: syntax error at line 21: `(' unexpected

Furthermore, if I try to import Tkinter interactively, I get another error
(something like 'cannot import tkinter', tkinter in lower case).
I'm not sure what went wrong. I changed the Setup file to enable the
inclusion of the tkinter module.

Can someone please help me?
