Linux: LDSHARED: Command not found

When I run the makesetup command in ./Modules it gives
a list of errors:

LDSHARED: Command not found or somesuch.

'Scuse the ignorance, but have I done something wrong?
I upgraded to libc4.6.27 and gcc2.6.2 recently, and might
well have screwed it up... ;-)
