TKinter: How to get started?

Reading all of the various web pages and news articles, it is clear
that what I really want to do is wait for the release of Visual Python
and the Simple Python Application Maker. *sigh* Alas, the things that
I would like to do won't wait. The local Python Guru has warned me away
from STDWIN and towards TKinter, but I don't know quite how to get started.

Here's the situation:
- Everything is installed correctly here (minus the stdwin).
- I will have access to the book "Tcl and the Tk toolkit".
- I have used Tcl before.
- I used Tk once to create some simple button containing widgets.

I think a good example that demonstrates a simple graphical
Python/Tkinter program would be enough, but a few words on how
Tkinter works differently than Tk would be very helpful too.

Thanks!
