What is the LCD of osmodule

Does anyone happen to know what subset of posixmodule is supported
under osmodule for all platforms ? What is the Least Common Denominator
to write towards ?

The specific question that prompts the above question is:
what is the most best way to search for the first file along a
path list ( like sys.path )? I suppose that wrapping open(file,'r')
in a try/except is the most PORTABLE way. Is that the BEST way ?
