Yesterday I wrote that Helmut's problem was probably concentrated in
atoi() and atof(). I sent him a patch to stropmodule.c that
implemented these two in C and he reported that his processing time
went down from 258 seconds to 22 seconds, which compares OK with the
9.5 seconds that MAWK took (which is specialized in text processing).

This patch will be part of official patch #1.
